Night of the Ancient Bonfires

My journey with Ledungen and the signal mountains in our archipelago began back in 1991 when I sent a letter to Paula Wilson (later hostess at the Bengtskär lighthouse).

The letter contained an idea to use the ancient signal mountains for Vårdkasar and Böten to celebrate togetherness around the Baltic Sea with bonfires in late summer. Paula showed my letter to Birgitta Bröckel, operations manager at the Åboland Cultural Council. And Birgitta took the idea up for discussion at a seminar with the Nordic Council of Ministers. Everyone got on board with the idea and I was appointed chairman of a working group in the winter of 1991–92 where all the arrangements and authorities were involved, including the police, rescue services, the coast guard and the Åboland Cultural Council. We then established all the foundations for what the "Night of the Ancient Bonfires" would be. The Åboland Cultural Council's annual report for 1992 contains more detailed information.
